5岁开始跟随父亲方健雄学习大提琴，其父亲是汕头爱乐交响乐团大提琴首席方博士早年除跟随父亲学习外还跟随原广州星海音乐学院附中校长李继武与广东民族乐团大提琴首席翁庆升学习大提琴。2008年，以优异成绩考入广州星海音乐学院管弦系跟随沈一郡教授学习。在获得本科学位后以特殊录取形式进入美国辛辛那提大学音乐学院跟随William Grubb博士学习攻读大提琴研究生与博士。在校期间，获得由美国辛辛那提音乐学院颁发的“艺术家文凭（Artist Diploma）”，方博士曾任加拿大英属哥伦比亚大学音乐学院室内乐助教，并跟随加拿大著名大提琴家Eric Wilson教授学习。 2020年，方博士通过中国沈阳音乐学院高层次人才引进计划，受聘于该学院管弦系担任大提琴教师。
方博士曾多次获得国际国内的比赛奖项。American Fine Arts Festival音乐比赛第一名。New York Golden Music Awards音乐比赛第一名。浪漫音乐国际音乐比赛第一名。北京长城国际音乐夏令营，并获得长城协奏曲比赛第一名，与室内乐比赛第一名。香港国际弦乐比赛第一名与北京爱琴杯国际大提琴比赛优秀表演奖。海峡四地大提琴比赛公开高级组一等奖。新加坡文化盛典大提琴专业组金奖。
方博士的演奏遍布世界以及中国各地：纽约卡内基音乐厅，纽约皇后大学音乐学院，北京国家大剧院，意大利科尔托纳音乐节，加拿大英属哥伦比亚大学，法国巴黎索邦大学，休斯顿大学音乐学院，辛辛那提音乐学院，南卡罗莱纳大学，印第安纳波利斯大学，巴特勒大学，上海东方艺术中心，广州星海音乐厅，天津音乐厅，徐州音乐厅，深圳音乐厅，惠州保利剧院，汕头林百欣会展中心。他还在全国各地高校与中学举行大提琴普及讲座，获得社会各界的支持与好评。
值得一提的是，方博士为大提琴改编了中国著名小提琴协奏曲《梁祝》并与赵新泰先生指挥的汕头爱乐交响乐团在中国首演了这一伟大的作品。次年，又在辛辛那提华人音乐协会的强力推荐下与美国指挥家Mark Gibson合作完成《梁祝》的美国首演，并与著名笙演奏家胡建兵老师同台演奏由他为笙与大提琴改编的《阿细跳月》，时任辛辛那提大学校长Santa Ono亲临晚会并给予高度赞赏，此次晚会还得到国内外近二十家主流媒体的报道，其中包括中国新闻网、美国中文网、新浪网、凤凰网、网易新闻等。
方博士旅美期间获得国际多位大提琴大师的指导：美国大提琴泰斗Lynn Harrell,女大提琴家Alisa Weilerstein，巴黎国立音乐学院Philip Muller，美国克利夫兰交响乐团首席Mark Kosower，印第安纳大学教授Eric Kim，休斯顿交响乐团Brinton Smith,皮博迪音乐学院教授Alan Stepansky，明尼苏达大学教授Andriana Contino。

Dr. Fang is an active Chinese cellist. He began his studies with his father, principal cellist in the Shantou Philharmonic Orchestra. After receiving his B.M. degree in Guangzhou Xinghai Conservatory of Music, he went to Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and studied with Dr. William Grubb for his Artist Diploma, Master of Music Degree, and Doctor of Musical Arts. Dr. Fang now move to Vancouver with his wife pianist Dr. Xinyuan Li and he is currently study with well know Canadian cellist Professor Eric Wilson in The University of British Columbia School of Music.
Dr. Fang won many international competitions in his early career, which include the 1st price in Hong Kong International String competition, Beijing Great Wall Concerto & Chamber music competition and New York Fine Arts Festival Competition, etc.
From 2016, Dr. Fang became the artist residence in Xavier University where he teaches chamber music class. His sextet contemporary ensemble All of the Above made their Carnegie Hall debut in December 2017 and their international debut in July 2017 as an ensemble-in-residence at the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Cortona, Italy.
As a traditional Chinese cello music and contemporary cello music promoter, Dr. Fang did a world premiere for cello version of “Butterfly Lovers Concerto” (the most famous Chinese concerto), directed by maestro Mark Gibson. On December 1st, 2017, Dr. Fang held “14 New Chinese Cello Compositions World Premiere” concert, which he commissioned with 14 Chinese composers from 14 main China conservatories. In mid- 2018, Dr. Fang founded the website ChineseCelloMusic.org, which is for collecting and promoting all Chinese cello music.
Dr. Fang’s cello: “Ex- Robinson”, made in 1870 and donated by Cincinnati cellist Mrs. Robinson for pursuing his music life.
